UNESCO CHAIR on Media, Dialogue and Mutual Understanding established at the School of Journalism and Public Relations from Skopje, Republic of Macedonia
The Chair of Media, Dialogue and Mutual Understanding is founded at the School of Journalism and Public Relations, in cooperation with UNESCO.
The aim of the Chair is to contribute towards the enhancement of social cohesion, cultural pluralism and intercultural communication among various groups and communities in Macedonia.
In the next four years, the Chair will be working on educational programs, research studies, publishing activities, production and developing multimedia platforms that will be intended for journalists, professionals in the field of communications and reporting, as well as all citizens.
The topics will be focused on cultural diversity and the importance of civic participation in creating the public agenda and forming public opinion. The School will implement the activities in collaboration with 11 partners of the Chair, including universities, institutes, journalism associations and news media from the Netherlands, Denmark, Slovenia and Macedonia.
Within the Chair, the School started a program development for a second cycle of studies for two departments, Media management and multimedia, and Management of strategic communications, the first of its kind in Macedonia. The studies will be implemented together with the European universities-members of the Chair. Also, the study programs will be enriched with content related to cultural pluralism and global processes, as well as the importance of intercultural communication in contemporary journalism and public relations.
The School created a new web platform www.unescochair-vs.edu.mk, which represents an initiative for enhancing the role of citizens in the public debate and intercultural dialogue, and will serve as an online educational resource and public forum.
All activities have a purpose to broaden the knowledge of journalists and public relations experts, and to encourage the sharing of common experiences between local and international experts, setting new standards in higher education, in accordance with European standards and global trends. The UNESCO Chair of Media, Dialogue and Mutual Understanding was presented at the international conference “Journalism education, Professional Values and Cultural Diversity”, held on Tuesday (28.6.2011), 10.00 – 16.00, in “Holiday Inn”, Skopje.
